UCT PERC Workshop: Ethnography and Intervention in ICT4D (5 August 2011)

The aim of the one day workshop was to explore new methodologies for undertaking research and design in ICT4D.  Traditional (software) engineering methods are ineffective when working in rural and less developed contexts.

While we some understanding of the differences between ICT interventions in the developed world and those in our context issues remain. For example, the tension between the interventionist and developmental attitude native to engineers and the need to allow communities a controlling voice in shaping their lives. What we would really like to do is to use ethnography as a tool for better design – but for some ethnography and software engineering seems contradictory.
